18 police dismissed over Skardu violence
Gilgit — Eighteen officers and personnel from Gilgit-Baltistan Police have been dismissed from service for their alleged failure to control violent protests and arson in Skardu in March 2026.
The action follows a departmental inquiry into the unrest, which erupted after the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in late February.
Those dismissed include one inspector, two sub-inspectors, several head constables and constables. The Regional Police Officer for Baltistan issued the dismissal orders based on the inquiry findings and recommendations.
The officers concerned have the right to appeal to the Inspector General of Police, Gilgit-Baltistan, within the stipulated period.
The protests in Skardu turned violent as demonstrators set fire to several buildings, including government offices and a United Nations facility, leading to clashes with security forces.
In a statement, Gilgit-Baltistan Police said the dismissals were part of its commitment to upholding the rule of law and maintaining strict accountability within the force.
