Plantation Drive Held in Gilgit
Gilgit -- A plantation drive aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and addressing climate change challenges was organized at Sonikot Payin under the collaboration of the Progressive Climate Foundation (PCF) Gilgit-Baltistan Chapter, Forest Department Gilgit, and Eco-Essence.
Spokesperson to the Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan Shabbir Mir attended the event as chief guest, while representatives of partner organizations, volunteers, and local community members also participated, reflecting a collective commitment toward climate action in the region.
During the drive, 50 saplings, including poplar and pine species, were planted. These plants are considered suitable for the ecological conditions of Gilgit-Baltistan and play a key role in improving biodiversity, stabilizing soil, and enhancing overall environmental health.
Gilgit-Baltistan remains highly vulnerable to climate change impacts, including glacier retreat, erratic weather patterns, land degradation, and biodiversity loss. In this context, organizers termed the plantation initiative a step toward climate mitigation through carbon sequestration, soil conservation, water resource protection, and ecosystem restoration.
The event also highlighted the importance of community engagement and youth participation in environmental conservation. Organizers said such initiatives not only support afforestation efforts but also raise awareness about sustainable practices and collective responsibility in tackling climate change.
The Progressive Climate Foundation reiterated its commitment to continuing similar initiatives in collaboration with government institutions, civil society, and local communities to promote a resilient and sustainable future for Gilgit-Baltistan.
