CPEC project to secure KKH at Uchar Nala

GILGIT -- A major infrastructure project under the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is set to address persistent travel disruptions at Uchar Nala in Upper Kohistan, one of the most vulnerable points along the Karakoram Highway (KKH).

For years, the area remained prone to mudflows and flash floods during rainfall, where even light showers would trigger streams of mud and debris that damaged property and blocked the highway.

The situation often resulted in prolonged closure of the Karakoram Highway, cutting off Gilgit-Baltistan’s road link with the rest of Pakistan for days or sometimes weeks.

Officials say the construction of a modern bridge and tunnel at Uchar Nala is expected to provide a permanent solution to the problem. The project aims to ensure safer and smoother travel along the highway while preventing repeated losses caused by flooding and landslides.

The Karakoram Highway, often described as a lifeline for northern Pakistan, plays a critical role in trade, tourism and connectivity between Gilgit-Baltistan and the rest of the country. It also serves as a key route linking Pakistan with China under the CPEC framework.

Experts say infrastructure upgrades at vulnerable points like Uchar Nala are essential due to the region’s rugged mountainous terrain and extreme weather patterns, which frequently damage roads and disrupt travel.

Authorities believe such projects will significantly improve connectivity and strengthen economic integration between Gilgit-Baltistan and other parts of Pakistan.
