Viral Videos Trigger Forest Probe in Gilgit

GILGIT: Alarm over the alleged destruction of precious forest reserves in Gilgit-Baltistan intensified after videos showing suspected illegal tree cutting in the Haramosh, Jutial Nallah forests went viral on social media, prompting authorities to launch a high level inquiry into the matter.

The Forest, Parks and Wildlife Department Gilgit-Baltistan said it had taken serious notice of the allegations after the footage circulated widely on Facebook and other platforms, sparking public concern over environmental degradation and the protection of natural forests.

On the directives of the Chief Conservator Forests Gilgit-Baltistan, a four member inquiry committee was constituted on May 15, 2026 under the chairmanship of Divisional Forest Officer Dr. Jibran Haider to investigate the allegations.

The inquiry committee conducted a detailed two day field visit across the forests of Jutial Nallah and carried out an extensive inspection of the affected areas. During the investigation, the team verified ground realities, collected field data, interacted with local stakeholders and gathered GIS based pictorial evidence to assess the nature and extent of the alleged illegal activities.

The committee has submitted its detailed report along with recommendations to the department.

The Forest Department said strict action would be taken against any officers or officials found involved through negligence, misconduct, facilitation or failure in protection duties under relevant disciplinary and legal provisions.

The statement further said that all individuals involved in illegal cutting, transportation or trade of forest produce would also face action under applicable forest and criminal laws without any leniency.

Reaffirming its zero tolerance policy against illegal encroachments, timber mafia activities and destruction of natural forests, the department said it was determined to make the case an example to deter future violations and protect the ecological wealth and environmental security of Gilgit-Baltistan.

The department also urged the public to cooperate by reporting any illegal cutting or suspicious activities affecting forests and wildlife resources across the region.
