ETI supported Water Policy Approved in GB

GILGIT: The Gilgit-Baltistan Cabinet approved the Gilgit-Baltistan Water Policy during its fourth meeting, marking a step towards sustainable water resource management and improved water governance across the region.

The Water Management and Irrigation Department (WM&ID) developed the policy with technical and financial support from the Economic Transformation Initiative Gilgit-Baltistan (ETI-GB), which contributed Rs 27.998 million towards its formulation.

According to ETI-GB, the investment reflects the programme’s commitment to evidence-based policymaking and strengthening institutional capacity for sustainable water resource management in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Under Component 3, Programme Management and Policy Support, ETI-GB assists relevant government departments in developing policies and strategic frameworks to improve governance, institutional capacity and sustainable development.

The programme previously supported the formulation of the Land Titling Policy, which was approved by the GB Cabinet on February 14, 2022, during its 16th meeting. The policy was subsequently notified by the Senior Member Board of Revenue on April 4, 2022, to provide legal ownership rights to households benefiting from land developed under the ETI-GB programme.

ETI-GB is also supporting the Gilgit-Baltistan Communication and Works Department in strengthening infrastructure planning for roads and bridges to ensure the long-term sustainability of public investments.

The approval of the Water Policy represents a collaborative effort between WM&ID and ETI-GB. It is intended to provide a framework for strengthening water governance, promoting responsible water use and ensuring sustainable management of water resources while supporting climate resilience across Gilgit-Baltistan.
